Miyatake, Wallin to

speak at luncheon

Baseball coach Kallen Miyatake and softball coach and Jamie Wallin will be the guest speakers at the Vulcan Booster Club luncheon at Coqui’s Hideaway Restaurant at noon Tuesday.

The cost is $15 per person, and the public is encouraged to attend in order to meet the coaches and hear their comments on the upcoming seasons.

Miyatake, a former player for the Vulcans, was named the interim coach in July. In Wallin’s third season at the helm of the softball program, UHH finished last year as co-champions of the Pacific West Conference and earned a bid to the NCAA Division II regionals.

Pirates stay perfect

in AJA baseball

Michael Oshita pitched five innings of scoreless relief Sunday at Wong Stadium as the Waiakea Pirates edged the Keaukaha Warriors 2-1 to remain undefeated in the Hawaii AJA Memorial Baseball League.

Jensen Sato and Onan Masaoka each drove in runs as the Pirates (3-0) scored twice in the bottom of the first inning.

Aaron Correa struck out 12 in six innings of work but took the loss for the Warriors (1-2). Both runs charged to Correa (0-1) were unearned. He allowed four hits and walked five. Kiley Kawazoe was 2 for 4 for the Warriors and Matt Camacho finished with an RBI.

Kaili Tanaka started for Waiakea and walked six but allowed only a hit with two strikeouts.

In the other game Sunday, Matt Chun went 3 for 5 with a double and two RBIs to help the Keaukaha Legends trump the Corsairs.

Makoa Rosario and Jaron Kawaguchi each added two hits for the Legends (2-1), and Conrad Kauffman (1-0) picked up the win with three innings of work out of the bullpen.

Chase Komatsu was 3 for 4 for the Corsairs (0-3), and Mackanzy Maesaka had two hits.

Evan Ishihara (0-2) started for the Corsairs and allowed three hits, four runs — one earned — in 2 2/3 innings with two walks and four walks.

Hilo-Volcano run and relay is Jan. 18

Big Island Road Runners is holding it’s Hilo to Volcano 50k-ultra and 31.1-bike relay Jan. 18.

Both events start at Coconut Island and end at Cooper Center in Volcano Village.

The ultra runners start at 6 a.m. and the relay teams start at 6:30 a.m. Registration is $35 per participant until Monday, then it is $40 per participant. There is a $5 discount for current BIRR members.

OSOK results

from skeet range

Jordan Hara finished first at an OSOK shoot held in December at the country trap and skeet range. Events consisted of both skeet and wobble trap for a total of 100 targets.

Top guns: 1. Jordan Hara, 82 (12 gauge); 2. Dexter Egdamin, 74 (28 gauge); 3. Tom Griffiths and Elton Endo, 71 (12 gauge).

The next event will be held Feb. 23 after the PITA state shoot.
